WHAT IS WORLDWISE?

An initiative of the College of Arts and Humanities, World Wise: The Arts and Humanities in the 21st Century presents a series of three moderated roundtable conversations on the value of the arts and humanities in a global era:

  • The Arts as Creative Catalyst - April 6, 2007
    Fables and Formulas - November 14th, 2007
    Be(com)ing American - February 20, 2008

WORLDWISE grew from the College’s sense that the time was right to begin setting priorities for the future of the arts and humanities on our campus with an open, engaged, wide-ranging and creative exploration of what we do and how it matters in the broadest sense.  The intention is to identify and articulate the important role to be played by the arts and humanities in shaping our global future.

The Outcomes

The aim is also to deepen existing partnerships and open new ones: between the College of Arts and Humanities and other units on campus, particularly the sciences and engineering; between the faculty and students and the College alumni; between the College of Arts and Humanities and our state legislators; and between the College and extra-mural organizations, particularly the Maryland Humanities Council, the NEH and the NSF.

The Roundtables:

All programs will follow the successful format piloted in the first roundtable, The Arts as Creative Catalyst: the first half of the two-hour conversation was based on responses to a set of questions about creativity in a global era that the artists were sent in advance, the second half on questions from the audience.  The invited guests were given the same set of questions, which also appeared in the event program.  All programs will be video-taped for possible future use.
